How to write an adult toy review Comments Off

The key to writing an adult toy review is to benefit and help would-be buyers who are curious about the product. Your review could strongly influence whether they buy it or not so it’s important you review and analyze every aspect available.

Time and time again I read free-lance adult toy reviews which give me no specification of the toy, how it operates, what it looks like or it’s functions. Instead, they just write: “Ooooh, it felt sooooo good. I came like 5 times in 10 minutes!” which leaves me arching up my eyebrow and wondering how that could possibily count as a ‘review’.

My tips on writing a good review:

  • Test your product out thoroughly prior to writing your review. Use every function your toy has to offer, try it in the shower (if waterproof), use it with and without lubricants and ensure you know everything there is to know about the product in question.

  • Write about the specifications of the toy in detail because although some sex toy websites give a description, they miss out some important details. Discuss the length, girth, insertable length, colours available and materials.

  • Write about the features and functions of the toy. If it has 50 combinations, write about it in detail – we want to know what these 50 combinations are!

  • Is the toy waterproof, submergable or strictly not allowed near water? Discuss this in detail. I know I’ve found myself browsing for toys and there has been no mention of it’s resistance against water which in come cases (ie, vibrators), discourages me from buying.

  • Does it require batteries? If so, what type and are they included with the purchase of the toy? If it’s not battery operated, perhaps it works of the mains via an adapter, in which case you should mention this and discuss if the toy is wired or wireless. Do you charge it on a docking station or plug it directly into the mains?

  • At one point in your review, you should make space to write about how to clean it. This will obviously depend on the material of the toy but it’s important to educate your readers on how to keep it clean and maintain it so it remains in good condition.

  • Good grammar and punctuation is important when writing anything, but extremely important when writing a review. I guess it gives a sense of professionalism and shows you really know what you’re talking about compared to someone who writes something in short-hand lingo and doesn’t use capital letters or full stops in the appropriate places.

  • I feel that posting photos of your product is important as it gives a clearer indication of what the toy looks like compared to photoshopped/enhanced ones they use on the websites. Including a few close-up photos in your review makes it easier for the reader to understand what your writing about, rather than trying to imagine it.

  • If your writing a review on behalf of a company, ensure you give them credit and post frequent links to the product page and their website, along with prices and details of delivery. If the website has free shipping on all products, that’s something definitely worth mentioning.

  • Your honest opinion is obviously important when writing a review, especially if it’s for a company. If you love the toy, say so and tell the readers why it’s so great. If you don’t like the toy, you’re entitled to say so along as you give a valid reason. I’ve read plenty of reviews that have gone along the lines of; “this toy is crap!” and they never followed on and said WHY it was crap. In my reviews I always give my opinion of the product, along with rating it out of puppy paws. A bad product gets 1 puppy paw whereas an amazing one gets 5 puppy paws. A simply but effective rating system.

Hopefully my little tutorial of advice will be able to guide some of you who are perhaps new or inexperienced when it comes to writing up adult toy reviews. You don’t have to be sent free products from a company to be eligable to write a review, you could do it primarily to help out others. So what are you waiting for? Pass on your wisdom and write about your favourite adult toy; who knows, it may encourage others out there to buy one for themselves.
